Places

By definition, local history is linked to particular places. It is the history of this place rather than that place. This remains true even when the historian adapts a thematic approach, examining, for instance, the economic history of a city or town. Local history is intensely specific.

In this section we present bilingual lists of placenames - street names, townland names and names of geographical features - in the greater Cork area as well as an outline history of St Patrick's Street. We hope to expand the bilingual lists and to add histories of other Cork places as the site grows.

If you do not find what you are looking for in our pages, you might also search the www.logainm.ie website, the official online Placenames Database of Ireland, from Fiontar (DCU) and The Placenames Branch of the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.  The first phase of this service was launched in October 2008.
