North Abbey Square on the North Mall stands on part of the site of a Franciscan friary founded around 1229. Lucas' directory for 1787 mentions North Abbey but the present square seems to date from the nineteenth century.
The square consists of ten double-fronted houses arranged on three sides of the square. Niall Linehan, a member of the well-known Frank and Walters pop group, lived here in the late 1990s.
The building which overlooks the square was Our Lady of the Rock national school.
