Barrack Street Area : Lane

The area around Barrack Street was once a warren of lanes.These lanes had some of the worst housing conditions in the city. The photograph shows one of the many lanes. In the 1920s Cork Corporation began a programme of slum clearance which demolished many old lanes. The former residents of the lanes were then housed in council houses in the suburbs.
