Theatre in Cork: 1985

1985 was the year of 'Cork 800', a year-long commemoration of Cork's 800-year status as a chartered city with powers of local government. The festivities included theatrical performances; a Tribute to Frank O'Connor presented five of his best know plays by the Blarney Steet Community Association; and the unveiling of a plaque at Frank O'Connor's boyhood home at 251 Blarney Street. James N. Healy presented A touch of Cork, a one-man show in which he performed a Cork-themed show at Blackrock Castle.  Another performance celebrating the octocentenary year  was Showtime 800, a variety show concert in Cork Opera House. A local-interest highlight of the year in Cork theatre was the premier of Barrack Street in the Everyman playhouse. This play was set in Barrack Street, Cork circa 1900 and it had its opening night on 15 April. The Christmas pantomime that year in the Everyman was The Wind in the Willows.
